Boeuf aux Oignons

Boeuf aux Oignons (some onions missing courtesy of the Hub)

MIL didn't want to eat in the Chinese restaurant here, said the food wasn't good. I therefore had to make lunch on a Saturday afternoon when usually that would be my time off from slaving over the stove. Decided on 2 simple dishes that could be prepared quickly and served with steamed jasmine rice : Boeuf aux Oignons (Beef with Onions) and Caramel Prawns.

Caramel Prawns

There's a charity pool party at the golf this evening, but we've decided to skip it in favour of LS' BBQ party in Levizzano. Hub attended the former last Summer and really enjoyed it, but I wanted to meet a few of the English mums and managed to convince him to come with me instead. In any case, I'm really not into high-class social events.

Germany beat Argentina this afternoon - which made us very happy for our German friends. We've lived a few years in Germany and have some affinity with the country, so we wanted Germany to win. Though if it was Spain vs Germany, we may have our loyalties divided since we've lived in Spain too. :-)

Beef with Onions :

400g Beef filet (tenderised and finely sliced)
1 Tsp Bicarbonate of soda (or cornstarch)
1 Tsp ground Black Pepper
1 Tbsp Dry Sherry
1 Tsp light Soy sauce

2 Tsp toasted Sesame oil
1 slice fresh Ginger (julienned)
1 Garlic clove (minced)
1 large Onion (sliced)
1 Red Chilli (sliced)

1 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
2 Tsp light Soy Sauce
1 Tbsp Sugar
1 Tsp Rice Vinegar (optional)
2 Tbsp Water

Marinate the beef with the BC, sherry, pepper and soy sauce.

Heat the sesame oil in a wok and fry the ginger and garlic till fragrant. Add some peanut oil followed by the onions and chilli. Stir-fry till the onions are soft.

Add the marinated beef slices and stir-fry till they are pink.

Pour in the oyster, light soy and sugar and mix well. Add some water if necessary.

We eat our beef rare so once the meat and sauces have come together I'll remove the beef from the wok and serve it.
